Set in an alternate America where witches ended their persecution 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the U.S. government to fight for their country, Motherland follows three young women from basic training in combat magic into early deployment at Fort Salem. In this world, the traditional roles of gender and power are flipped with the more dominant women on the front lines fighting looming terrorist threats that are familiar to our world, but with tactics and weapons supernatural.

I've watched 1x1 and enjoyed it. It's entertaining and currently enjoys 4 out of 5 stars (4 ratings) here. It's quite controversial over at IMDb, where many people seem to love it or hate it. If you watch it as war propaganda and promoting feminism you'll dislike it. If you watch it as entertainment it's a good show. smile

Did you notice the painting on the wall? The original, Emmanuel Leutze's Washington Crossing the Delaware just shows men:

It's only visible for a few seconds - I love it when a show adds something like this! smile

Watched it, it had a relatively good start. Might be good.

Feminism is very likely what motivated it, but it actually plays out like a proper "what if" type show.
War propaganda... from the tropes I could see so far, it actually seems as if it will either end up being anti-war propaganda or, even better, something that actually looks at the nuances thereof.

We will see.

Well, isn't there at least one of the show's semi-main characters in that painting?
It also is not exactly shown in the background.

Still, yes, it does get its point across. One detail there I do like and didn't notice before are the tornadoes in the background.

Re: Motherland: Fort Salem [Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi]

Woefully woke and predictable.

4

Re: Motherland: Fort Salem [Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi]

I'll give it a try.

And "woke" is a banned word.

Okay well, I actually like it. And I like their use of voice as a weapon (and the effects they use on it is kind of interesting).

Yes!

Spoiler

The whole 'setting their faces on fire' thing is also totally unique. smile

I kinda feel like there's a plot twist coming regarding the terrorists... we'll see!

Re: Motherland: Fort Salem [Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi]

1x8 was another cool episode. I thought that empty pool looked somehow familiar... and then I remembered: I had seen it 3 years ago ( yikes )...

Re: Motherland: Fort Salem [Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi]

Well, season 1 just wrapped.

I really liked episode 9. It did really well at establishing the stakes and what role the characters involved are going to play. Ep10 dialed back on it a bit, but at the same time set up a lot of interesting things for the show to explore later.

Overall this has been a pretty good show so far, one of my favourites for this year. Looking forward to where they are gonna take it...

Re: Motherland: Fort Salem [Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi]

Yes, some_one, I agree. The season finale totally looked like they already got the OK for the show's renewal, so it made sense to announce that early, and not wait several months.

Re: Motherland: Fort Salem [Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi]

I enjoyed this show as well. It grabbed me out of the gate and creatively came into its own in the nick of time. This show did a great job finding a strong balance between the world-building, character exploration, and plot progression. Plus, I thought the three leads were well written; each had their own personal arcs that held my interest, on top of their shared arc as a unit. They were definitely more potent as a unit. Beautiful cinematography, diverse cast, well-written, well-acted, well-produced, well-executed, phenomenal world/lore building, and it spins the idea of witches right on its head. Greater things lie ahead. I can't wait for Round Two.

No, not Charmed. Think maybe halfway between Harry Potter and Full Metal Jacket. Not really either, but a bit of both.

The picture... yeah, I guess it fits well enough.

Re: Motherland: Fort Salem [Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi]

well I have watched 3 eps and seems more like  an early form of Starship Troopers before they go bug hunting. Their main tool seems to be that vocal enhancer that various of the women used in Team-Arrow. Oh and the requisite tool for a member of the Spree ( what on  earth is that?) is a cigarette lighter to burn your face off. Easy to determine if  you are one? just  search them for cigarette lighters? One good thing it did give a job to a load of geriatric actors who dont say anything other than click their teeth ( if they have any).  I'll probably watch the rest as it is only 10 eps but I dont have high hopes. I dont care about any of the characters ( with one a Halle Berry lookalike), standard types, hope the Spree gets them. I am on the side of the Spree, get them all to take a running jump, save us from this  dull humorless show. The show should have been called Charmless. Potentia Trium!. zap! oh and the dont commit suicide message at the end, really? the show that bad?

Ah yes, that's the one I couldn't think of. The movie, not the book. Good comparsion.

Don't get me wrong, this is definitely a drama show. If you are looking for something else, you won't get much of it here. Still, it does get fairly good over time if you take it for what it is.

Also uh... you too seem angry?

inspired by the title picture. the show seems to be getting worse? next the sex party without any sex and then the party that has to have balloons - what is a party without balloons? ( eps 6). S.S.T. atleast didnt take it self seriously this show does.

It's not supposed to be comedy. Just based on your past posts you seem to prefer rather harmless shows? (You love https://next-episode.net/stargirl but I don't recall any appreciation for https://next-episode.net/preacher or https://next-episode.net/happy! or https://next-episode.net/the-boys. smile ) Maybe this show just isn't for you?

merc_1 wrote:

Similar messages are sometimes added to other shows that feature suicides or self-injury, you might want to read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copycat_suicide.

You know that you don't have to keep watching shows you dislike, right? wink

What is S.H.T.?

Re: Motherland: Fort Salem [Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi]

sorry corrected  should be S.S.T. ( star ship troopers) I only have access to  a limited number of shows so haven't watched those two. Its just pretentious to think this show would encourage suicide. ( I thought at first this was a jape like the very end of Futureman pretends to be real)  Might as well insist that Buffy... adds message to the effect dont copy this at home and start staking people - at the time the show was important for empowering young women in some circles and some people even  took post grads in it.

humour(less) not the same as comedy. This show is just grim and silly with its 1950's style "sex",  & balloons and lighter fluid and cigarette lighters. Would be amusing if they were a parody of something?  You can be serious and witty at the same time best to be so if you want people to watch. S.S.T was a parody of a certain type of blind American patriotism and belief in its military ( jingoism)?  I doubt I will watch season 2.
5/10

Re: Motherland: Fort Salem [Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi]

I think "starship" is one word, but moving on...

I don't think they are saying this show would encourage suicide, I think whenever subjects like this are featured in a show, and people are going through things, it just provides a helpline.  Nothing wrong with that. If you don't like it or agree with it, ignore it and move on.  If you don't like the show, that's fine, move on and watch something else you do like.

I don't agree with any of your points I think, but hey, I'm fine with that.

2020.  Meh.

Re: Motherland: Fort Salem [Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi]

well eps 8 is better ( took a long time to get there)  but I think the series should have been  sold under the DC/Marvel Amazon (women) metahumans/inhumans  banner rather than witches, which is  silly and has no real mileage there is very little witch like about their abilities
